Anti - Snoring Device, Silensor SL | Bremadent Dental Laboratory in London
Snoring is caused by constriction of the airways. Muscles in the head and throat decreases whilst sleeping and causes the narrowing of the upper respiratory tract. This accelerates the respiratory airflow and causes that area to vibrate as air is pushed out at a higher velocity through a smaller space as the bodies self defence mechanism. If left untreated, blood vessels that supply the head & neck muscles become weaker and will affect the ability to keep the airways open overtime.
Sleep apnea is a common disorder where the patient has shallow or pauses in their breathing during sleeping. The pauses can last from a few second to a few minutes and can occur 30 times or more per hour. This is a chronic condition that disrupts the patients sleep by going into a light sleep rather than a deep sleep. As a result the quality of sleep is poor, this makes the patient tired during the day.
Technical Features:
The Silensor SL consists of an upper & lower splint (hard/soft) with the lower jaw held in a pre-determined position (protrusive) by 2 connectors fixed laterally from the lower molar region to the upper canine area. Jaw movements is still possible but it does not allow for the lower to go backwards. The connectors come in 4 sizes and determined via the patients tolerance to the appliance. The shorter the connector the more protrusion is achieved. The device holds the air ways open by placing the lower jaw in a protrusive position and decreases the snoring noise as the body does not have to combat the airways narrowing.
