What is Emax?

Picture
If you have spent any time in modern restorative dentistry, you have almost certainly heard the words “Can we do this in E.max?”

In many practices, E.max has become the go-to option for highly aesthetic crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays, and anterior restorations. Patients love the natural appearance, dentists appreciate the predictable aesthetics, and dental laboratories value the balance between beauty and strength.

At Bremadent Dental Laboratory, E.max restorations are one of the most commonly prescribed aesthetic solutions we produce for dental practices across the UK. When handled correctly, they can deliver exceptional results that blend seamlessly into the natural dentition.

Of course, like most things in dentistry, it is never quite as simple as “just make it white.” There is a huge amount of science, planning, shade management, and technical precision involved in producing a truly natural-looking E.max restoration.

So, what exactly is E.max, why is it so popular, and what do dentists and the dental team need to know to maximise results?
What is E.max?
IPS E.max is an all-ceramic dental restorative material developed by Ivoclar. It is primarily made from lithium disilicate glass ceramic, a material known for combining excellent aesthetics with impressive strength.

Unlike traditional porcelain fused to metal restorations, E.max contains no metal substructure. This allows light to pass through the material in a way that more closely mimics natural enamel.

That translucency is one of the key reasons E.max has become so popular in cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
E.max can be used for:
• Crowns
• Veneers
• Inlays
• Onlays
• Anterior restorations
• Some posterior restorations
• Implant crowns
• Smile makeovers

For the right indication, it delivers an excellent combination of strength, aesthetics, and biocompatibility.
You can learn more about our E.max restorations here:
https://www.bremadent.co.uk/ips-emax

The Chemical Composition of E.max
Now for the slightly geeky bit. Don’t worry, there will not be an exam at the end.

IPS E.max is primarily composed of lithium disilicate glass ceramic. Its microstructure contains needle-like lithium disilicate crystals embedded within a glassy matrix.

This crystalline structure is what gives E.max its unique combination of strength and aesthetics.
The material typically contains:
• Lithium dioxide
• Silicon dioxide
• Phosphorus oxide
• Potassium oxide
• Other trace oxides for optical properties and processing

The high crystalline content helps resist crack propagation while maintaining optical characteristics similar to natural tooth enamel. In dentistry, that combination is gold dust, well, ceramic dust technically.

The Physical Properties That Make E.max So Popular
One of the reasons E.max became such a breakthrough material is because it bridged the gap between strength and aesthetics. Historically, highly aesthetic ceramics could sometimes lack durability, while stronger materials could appear opaque or lifeless.

E.max changed that.
Key physical properties include:
• Flexural strength of approximately 360 to 500 MPa depending on processing
• Excellent fracture resistance
• High translucency options
• Biocompatibility
• Smooth polished surface
• Wear compatibility with opposing dentition
• Minimal thermal conductivity
• Metal-free composition

For many anterior and moderate posterior cases, this provides an excellent balance between aesthetics and functional durability. Of course, case selection still matters.

You would not use E.max for every indication in the same way you would not wear flip-flops to climb Mount Everest.
Material selection should always be based on occlusion, preparation design, parafunction, space, and patient habits.

Why Translucency Matters in Dentistry
One of the biggest advantages of E.max is its translucency.
Natural teeth are not one flat colour. Light travels through enamel, reflects from dentine, and creates depth, vitality, and character. That is why natural teeth have life to them. Traditional opaque restorations can sometimes appear flat, dense, or artificial because they block light transmission. E.max allows varying levels of light transmission depending on the chosen opacity and translucency level.

Different ingots are available, including:
• High translucency
• Medium opacity
• Low translucency
• High opacity
• Impulse and characterisation ingots

Selecting the correct translucency level is critical. Too translucent and the underlying tooth preparation may darken the final result. Too opaque and the restoration can lose natural vitality. This is where communication between the dentist and laboratory becomes essential.

At Bremadent Dental Laboratory, we carefully assess:
• Preparation shade
• Stump shade
• Adjacent teeth
• Desired final shade
• Cement shade
• Thickness of material
• Patient expectations

All of these factors influence the final aesthetic outcome.

Why Stump Shades Are So Important
One of the most overlooked factors in cosmetic dentistry is the stump shade. Many clinicians take the final tooth shade but forget that the underlying preparation colour directly affects the final appearance of an all-ceramic restoration.
With E.max, especially in thinner restorations and veneers, the underlying tooth colour can significantly influence the final result because of the material’s translucency.

Think of it like painting a wall. A light paint over a dark wall will behave differently compared to the same paint over a white wall. Exactly the same principle applies here. This is why accurate stump shade communication is incredibly important.

If a preparation is:
• Dark
• Root-filled
• Discoloured
• Metallic
• Severely stained

Then the laboratory may need to alter material opacity, layering techniques, or ceramic selection to compensate.
Without this information, matching the final shade becomes far more difficult. At Bremadent, we work closely with practices to ensure both shade and stump shade information are captured accurately to achieve predictable outcomes.

Shade Taking Is More Than Picking “A1”
Shade taking is both science and art. One of the most common misconceptions in dentistry is that shade matching is simply selecting A1, A2, or B1 and sending it to the laboratory.

In reality, natural teeth contain:
• Value variations
• Chroma differences
• Surface texture
• Internal characterisation
• Translucency zones
• Halo effects
• Incisal effects
• Fluorescence
• Opalescence

Even two teeth sitting next to each other are rarely identical.
That is why detailed shade communication matters.

At Bremadent Dental Laboratory, we encourage clinicians to provide:
• High-quality photographs
• Natural lighting images
• Polarised images where possible
• Stump shades
• Shade tabs in photographs
• Patient expectations
• Details regarding bleach shades
• Information on adjacent restorations

You can learn more about shade taking here:
https://www.bremadent.co.uk/blog/understanding-shade-taking-in-dentistry-basic-how-to-guide

The better the communication, the more predictable and natural the final restoration becomes.
And yes, surgery lighting can absolutely make everything look different.

A tooth that appears perfect under one light source can suddenly look completely different outside in daylight. Every technician has experienced that slightly nervous “walk to the window” moment during final checks.

The Importance of Preparation Design
Even the best material in the world cannot compensate for poor preparation design. For E.max restorations to perform predictably, correct reduction and preparation principles are essential.

This includes:
• Adequate reduction
• Rounded internal angles
• Smooth margins
• Clear finish lines
• Sufficient incisal clearance
• Proper occlusal space

Under-prepared teeth can lead to restorations that are either too bulky or too thin, compromising aesthetics or strength.
Communication between the dentist and laboratory is essential to ensure the material is being used appropriately.

Why Patients Love E.max Restorations
Patients increasingly want restorations that look natural and blend seamlessly into their smile. They do not want crowns that look chalky, opaque, or artificial.

E.max offers:
• Excellent aesthetics
• Natural translucency
• Metal-free confidence
• Smooth surface finish
• Long-term stain resistance
• High patient satisfaction

For many cosmetic and restorative patients, it provides an excellent solution when planned correctly.

Why Laboratories Matter More Than Ever
Modern ceramic dentistry is highly technique-sensitive.  Even with excellent materials, outcomes still depend heavily on:
• Design
• Layering
• Milling precision
• Staining
• Characterisation
• Occlusal management
• Cementation planning

At Bremadent Dental Laboratory, we combine digital workflows, technical precision, and artistic ceramic layering techniques to produce highly aesthetic restorations that support predictable outcomes for clinicians and patients alike.
Because ultimately, the restoration should not simply fit the tooth, It should fit the patient.
