Digital Reference Denture (Copy Dentures, 3D printed)

At Bremadent Dental Laboratory in London, we understand that dentures are not just about replacing teeth. They are about confidence, function, familiarity, and patient comfort. One of the most common things dentists hear is “I like my denture, I just want a new one like this.” That is exactly where digital reference dentures, also known as copy dentures, provide a practical and highly effective solution.

This modern approach combines traditional clinical principles with digital dentistry to create a streamlined workflow that benefits dentists, dental practices, and patients alike. It is efficient, predictable, and importantly, it respects what already works for the patient while improving what does not.

What Are Digital Reference Dentures
Digital reference dentures are a refined version of traditional copy dentures, using digital scanning and CAD design to replicate and improve an existing denture. Instead of starting from scratch, we use the patient’s current denture as the blueprint.

What this actually means in practice:
  • The patient keeps a familiar look and feel that they are already comfortable with, but with a newly improved fitting surface for better support and retention
  • Minor aesthetic adjustments can be made, such as tooth display, positioning, or smile line, without completely changing what the patient is used to
  • The result is a denture that feels recognisable to the patient but functions like a new, well-fitting prosthesis

For dentists, this removes a significant amount of uncertainty. You are not guessing what the patient wants. You are working from something they already accept, while improving fit and function.

Why This Approach Works So Well in Practice
Traditional denture workflows can be time-consuming and sometimes unpredictable. Patients may struggle to adapt to a completely new setup, even if it is technically correct.

Digital reference dentures solve several common challenges:
  • Reduced adaptation issues because the tooth setup is familiar
  • Fewer adjustments at fit stage due to improved accuracy
  • Greater patient acceptance and satisfaction
  • Less appointments, two appointments if done correctly

From a practice perspective, this leads to:
  • Less chairside time spent adjusting dentures and appointments
  • Quick appointments
  • Fewer review appointments
  • A smoother overall patient journey

It is a more efficient way of working without compromising quality. In fact, it often enhances it.

The Clinical Workflow Made Simple
One of the key advantages of this method is how easily it integrates into your existing clinical workflow. There is no need for complex additional steps or major changes to how your team operates.
The process is straightforward:
  1. Take an impression wash inside the patient’s existing denture to capture the current fitting surface
  2. Capture a full scan of the denture, including all external and fitting surfaces, or send it to Bremadent for scanning
  3. Prescribe any required changes to tooth position or denture base extension
  4. The denture is digitally designed using CAD based on the scan and impression data
  5. A try-in can be produced if required, or the case can go directly to the final denture

This method keeps appointments efficient and focused. It also reduces the number of clinical stages typically required with conventional dentures.

Chairside Simplicity for Dentists and Teams
From a dentist’s perspective, simplicity matters. The more predictable and streamlined the process, the easier it is to manage within a busy schedule.

In practice, this looks like:
  1. The patient attends with their existing denture, which they are already using daily
  2. A quick impression wash is taken to improve the fit surface
  3. A clinical assessment is made, focusing on any improvements needed
  4. The denture is scanned or sent to the lab for digital capture
  5. A clear prescription is provided with any requested changes

This approach removes the need for multiple stages such as primary impressions, secondary impressions, wax rims and tryins in many cases. It saves time for both the clinician and the patient.

Controlled Improvements Without Starting Again
One of the biggest advantages of digital reference dentures is the ability to make targeted, controlled improvements rather than starting from scratch.

Common adjustments include:
  • Increasing or reducing tooth display to improve aesthetics
  • Refining occlusion for better comfort and function
  • Extending the denture base for improved stability and support
  • Adjusting contours for better lip support or phonetics

Because everything is designed digitally, these changes are precise and consistent. You maintain what works while improving what does not. It is a practical balance between familiarity and enhancement.

Flexibility with Try Ins
Not every case requires a try-in, and that flexibility is one of the strengths of this workflow.

Depending on the case:
  • A 3D printed try-in can be produced for aesthetic or functional verification
  • Straight to finish can be an option in straightforward cases with minimal changes

This allows you to tailor the process to each patient. It also helps manage time more effectively without compromising clinical outcomes.

Digital Files and Long Term Security
One of the most valuable aspects of digital dentures is the ability to retain STL files. This is not just a technical feature, it is a practical advantage for both the practice and the patient.

With digital records:
  • Dentures can be reproduced quickly if lost or damaged
  • There is no need to repeat the full clinical process
  • Patients have reassurance that a backup is available

For dental practices, this reduces emergency appointments and improves service efficiency. It also adds a layer of future proofing to your denture workflow.

Improving Efficiency Across the Practice
Efficiency is not just about speed, it is about reducing friction in your workflow. Digital reference dentures help create a more predictable and manageable process.

The benefits include:
  • Fewer appointments required compared to traditional methods
  • Reduced chairside adjustment time
  • More consistent outcomes across cases

For your team, this means less stress and better time management. For your patients, it means a smoother experience with fewer disruptions.

A Better Experience for Patients
Patients value familiarity. When replacing a denture, the biggest concern is often whether the new one will feel the same or better.

Digital reference dentures address this directly:
  • The patient retains a familiar look and feel
  • The improved fit enhances comfort and stability
  • Adaptation is quicker and easier

It also gives you a strong communication tool during consultations. You can confidently explain that the new denture will be based on what they already like, just improved where necessary.

Why Us?
At Bremadent Dental Laboratory, we combine clinical understanding with advanced digital workflows to support dentists and dental practices across London and the UK. We understand the pressures of running a busy clinic and the importance of reliable lab support.

Our approach focuses on:
  • Clear and professional communication with your team
  • Efficient workflows that save time without compromising quality
  • Consistent, predictable results that support your clinical outcomes

Digital reference dentures are not about replacing your clinical expertise. They are about enhancing it with better tools, smarter processes, and more predictable results.

We provide a trusted laboratory service delivering consistent quality, saving chairside time, and supporting predictable patient outcomes.
