Every now and then, dentistry gets a small moment in the spotlight, even if it is hidden behind a scrum of professional athletes. England’s recent 33 to 19 win over New Zealand came with one of those moments for us at Bremadent. George Ford, who walked away with man of the match, was wearing a custom sports mouth guard crafted in our lab. We only spotted it afterwards when the photos started circulating, but we will happily take the victory in silence. It is not every day a World Cup level fly half is protected by something you made at a bench in Walthamstow.
A special thank you goes to Dr Anni Seaborne for trusting us with the case. This is the kind of partnership we love clinician and technician working together to keep athletes safe in a sport where tackles often resemble controlled collisions. While the crowd celebrates the tries, conversions and last minute sprints, dentistry quietly plays defence in the background, making sure the players’ teeth survive the match intact.
