Implant dentistry has never been more digital. Intraoral scanners, CAD software, guided surgery, and digital workflows have transformed how we restore implants. The promise is simple: greater accuracy, faster turnaround times, and fewer remakes.
Yet every dental laboratory has experienced those implant cases that simply do not make sense. Recently, we encountered a case involving an anterior implant crown. We manufactured the restoration, the crown was fitted, and the fit was incorrect. Naturally, we investigated, remade the case, double-checked the design, and produced a second restoration. The second crown was also incorrect. At this point, most laboratories start questioning everything. Was the implant library wrong? Was the scan body incorrect? Was there an issue during manufacturing? Was the implant placed differently than expected? When discussing the case with the clinician, I asked a simple question. "Did you take a radiograph to verify the scan body was fully seated?" The answer was no. The next response was one we've all heard before. "I don't get this problem with my other lab." As laboratory professionals, we've learned that statements like this are rarely the end of the investigation. They're usually the beginning. When we reviewed the raw scan data, the true cause became very clear.  If you’ve ever walked into a surgery and asked for a shade, you’ll know the situation. The nurse opens a drawer, pulls out a shade guide, and it’s either incomplete, disorganised, or nowhere to be found. In some cases, there isn’t one at all. It’s more common than people think, especially in busy dental practices where time is tight and systems aren’t always followed consistently.
