Are you using a ‘rando’ lab?

Rando is short for random, I came across this term upon a meeting with a dental practice who used this phrase when they were talking about their associates using ‘rando’ labs for their laboratory work, this phrase did make me laugh.

So what makes a rando lab, I asked a few dentists for their opinion and this is what they said?

• Strange business names that are not relevant to dentistry
• Usually a one person laboratory (one man band)
• The premises, usually in a residential property or a garage
• No land line phone number, usually a mobile number
• When you phone, no one answers the same with emails
• No company mission
• Cheap prices , long turn around
• A email address with hotmail, or gmail instead of the company name
• No social media presence or the other extreme, posting to much about their products with no context
• Recently opened, not been around long enough
• Using the phrases, the finest materials, leaders in dental technology, game changer
  
  

I suppose this list could go on and on, but when I took a deep dive into this, some of those factors alone have been the basis for some of biggest businesses in the world e.g Amazon.

I believe the main key thing is the value that is provided from the dental lab is what separates a reputable dental laboratory from a rando lab.

This could be value in terms of:

• Education
• Knowledge
• Customer service
• Legal policies – systems and protocols
• The team – experience, skill and attitude
• Quality – service, products manufactured
• Communication
